たえる【絶える】

1 〔存在しなくなる〕 cease to exist; disappear; vanish; 〔絶滅する〕 become [be] extinct; be annihilated; be extinguished; 〔死滅する〕 die (out); dry up.

●その血統[血筋]は絶えた. That line has died out [become extinct].

・キリマンジャロの頂上の雪は絶えたことがない. The snow at the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro has never melted.

・その種の迷信は容易には絶えない. Superstitions like that die hard.

・世に泥棒の絶えることはない. Thieves will never disappear from the world [always have their day].

・そういう習慣はすでに絶えて久しい. That custom stopped [died out] long ago.

・その言語はすでに絶えてしまった. The language has already become extinct [died out].

2 〔連続がとぎれる〕 cease; stop; be discontinued; be cut off; 〔終結する〕 end; come to an end; draw to a close. [⇒たえず]
